Surrealists: Angus McBean & Alfred Gescheidt

Angus McBean (1904 – 1990, British) was known for his theater portraits from the British stage including the Old Vic and the Royal Shakespeare Company. He often incorporated surrealism in his portraiture. He was a pioneer of surrealist photography working with photo montage and multiple exposures. The Harvard Library holds his archive in their extensive Theatre Collection.

Alfred Gescheidt (1926 – 2012, American) was a street photographer, often experimenting in photo collage. The images were humorous influenced by surrealism. One of the picture editors at The New York Times, John Durniak,  called him the Charlie Chaplin of the camera.
